2012 High School Writers Competition

Winners of Our First Annual Youth Writing Competition!

For the first time ever, Write On The River offered a special Writing Competition just for NCW students in grades 9-12.  We were thrilled with the quality and enthusiasm of the nearly thirty youth from our region who bravely stepped forward to participate.  Although every entry was laudable, we are pleased to announce that winner of our first Youth Writing Competition is Alexandrea Nessi, a freshman at Eastmont Junior High for her story, “Hypernormal.”     Click here to read her winning entry.  Generously sponsored by 2011 Write On The River Keynote Speaker Chelsea Cain, our first place winner received:

  • $100 Cash Award
  • A Special “Writers’ Gift”
  • Free attendance to the 2012 Write On The River Youth Writers Workshop on May 19 ($30 value)

About herself and her winning entry, Alexandrea says, “I first started truly writing when I was in the 6th grade, where my teacher, Angie McGinnis, encouraged us to write our own stories.  I started a small novel.  . . . Hypernormal (It’s been put aside for a couple of years but I’ve just now revisited it) and I took the prologue, condensed and edited it, and submitted it.  That was my first real story–in the making for 3 years.  I live with my grandmother, Susan Brabrook McDonald, in East Wenatchee.”

The following writers also received Honorable  Mentions from our Judges Panel for the high quality of their work:

Kassandra Leighton —  Senior, Cashmere High School: “The Night”

Morgan Olsen  —  Senior, West Side High School: “It Was You Who Found Me”

Carissa Climer  — Senior, Wenatchee High School: “Bea: A Cinderella Twist”
